Its that time of the year when dropping temperatures are matched by
increasing warmth in human relationships. Steps quicken smiles are
everywhere stores are packed and we all spend a bit more time thinking of
friends and relatives far away. It is in short over the river and through the
woods timetis the season
AH of us at Model Airplane News are thinking of you our readers and
advertisers as the holiday season rushes toward us. Our sincere best wishes
for a happy and joyous Thanksgiving Hanukkah and Christmas season may
the New Year bring you health and happinessthe rest will take care of itself.
As promised M.A.N. begins its new monthly feature on big airplanes
Giant Steps youll find the first installment on page 7. Giant Steps is au-
thored by Don Godfrey a modeler since 1944 the Zipper days. Music
studies and involvement in a retail music business caused a 20-year hiatus
from modeling but in 1970 a peanut scale released his latent modeling urges
and this brought him to a quarter scale Stearman in 1977. From tiny to titan in
seven years is evidence of Dons versatility in our hobbysport.
Don Godfrey has built five of the Stearmans since then and has involved
himself exclusively in big bird activity ever since his first bipe took to the
air. Don is interim President of the International Miniature Aircraft
Association Inc. a new organization for those interested in mammoth
Model Airplane News is pleased to begin a continuous offering on this
latest trend in model aviation and we hope to become a gathering place for all
the Big Thinkers.
In Octobers Free Flight News we carried a piece on the Gossamer
Penguin but failed to give credit to a real force behind the success of that
project Astro Flight and Bob Boucher of that firm. We apologize for that
since the Boucher brothers and their Astro Flight company have been in the
forefront of electric flight for many years and are truly the first to pioneer
successful solar-powered flight with the Sunrise I and II. Indeed Astro
Flight provided the powerplant and solar panels for the flight of the
Gossamer Penguin.
In the October issue we called for help in obtaining the one missing issue
from a collection of Model Airplane News that was believed to be complete.
The missing issue July 1933 turned out to not be missingit hasnt even
been misplaced It simply doesn t exist. In June of 193 3 the magazine moved
its monthly designation 30 days forward. August appeared in July in a
practice that continues to this day. We sincerely thank all who wrote to us
concerning this matter.
Of all things that have whirled around AMAs operation in recent years
the latest presidential nominations have garnered more comment to this
editor than anything else. For the first time in recent memory an incumbent
president with a desire to try for an additional term will not appear on the
ballot. We have no comment on this fact nominations that were made were
done so according to the Academys constitution. Nor do we support any one
candidate you have a choice between John Griggs and Homer Smith if you
have a preference then fire back your ballot to AMA appropriately marked.
If you wish to vote for Earl Witt the incumbent president (or any other
person) then you can do so by a write-in vote. One thing is certain you
should vote for someone. AMAs magazine has been filled with enough
information on all candidatesofficial or otherwiseto permit any member
to make an informed choice.
